ITIL Foundation: This is the entry-level qualification, and covers the basics of ITIL's framework in one training course and exam. It introduces how ITIL can be used to enhance the quality of IT service management within an organisation, and how to become a certified professional. It is perfect for those who work within an organisation that has already adopted the ITIL framework.
ITIL describes processes, procedures, tasks, and checklists which are not organization-specific nor technology-specific, but can be applied by an organization for establishing integration with the organization's strategy, delivering value, and maintaining a minimum level of competency. It allows the organization to establish a baseline from which it can plan, implement, and measure. It is used to demonstrate compliance and to measure improvement. There is no formal independent third party compliance assessment available for ITIL compliance in an organisation. Certification in ITIL is only available to individuals.
Since the early 1990s, EXIN and ISEB had been setting up the ITIL based certification program, developing and providing ITIL exams at three different levels: Foundation, Practitioner and Manager. EXIN[50] and BCS/ISEB[51] (the British Computer Society) had from that time onwards been the only two examination providers in the world to develop formally acknowledged ITIL certifications, provide ITIL exams and accredit ITIL training providers worldwide. These rights were obtained from OGC, the British government institution and owner of the ITIL trademark.[citation needed] OGC signed over the management of the ITIL trademark and the accreditation of examination providers to APM Group in 2006. Now, after signing a contract with EXIN,[50] BCS/ISEB, Loyalist Certification Services [1], PeopleCert Group and other certification bodies, APM Group has accredited them as official examination bodies, to offer ITIL exams and accredit ITIL training providers.[citation needed]

The aim of the ITIL service lifecycle is to provide best practices for IT service management (ITSM). It focuses on helping align the needs of an organization with IT services. The ITIL lifecycle consists of service strategy, service design, service transition, and service operation, along with continual service improvement throughout the process. The ITIL processes, procedures, responsibilities, and specifications are not specific to an organization like those of the SDLC, rather they can be practically applied to establish integration with the company’s IT strategy, providing value and maintaining competency. Essentially, it is a baseline from which the organization can plan, implement, monitor, and measure its processes.


Just like achieving an ITIL certification provides higher paying job opportunities and bolsters a resume, the expertise gained will also often give you more options in terms of job roles within the organization. Candidates with proficiencies in any of the upper-level ITIL courses will have their pick of the litter right away when it comes to where they want to go and what they want to do. So often in IT, employees must “pay their dues” so to speak, and settle on low-level roles or contractor positions until they prove themselves and showcase the knowledge and skillset required for more lucrative opportunities. With an ITIL certification, employees can often skip this process, and recruiters may decide to take input from the certified professional on where he or she wants to go right away at a competitive starting salary.

So, is it worth the buck? Definitely yes, if you’re able to demonstrate the value of your knowledge in your work. Having spoken to a sizeable number of IT consultants, practitioners, IT agents, I have seen that people who succeed with an ITIL certification are those who have put an effort into earning their certificate, and not just seen it as a way of checking a box for their career. Your goal should be acquiring knowledge and putting it in practice, measuring the impact of your work and not just ‘passing’ the certification.
In July 2013, ownership of ITIL was transferred to AXELOS, which maintains the ITIL framework and accredits training and examination institutes. Hundreds of ITIL Accredited Training Organizations (ATOs) are available to deliver training, and ITIL certification exams are administered at the end of a training course or by an Examination Institute (EI), many of which work directly with the ATOs.
Continuous Service Improvement: This phase defines new requirements for the preceding phases of ITIL based on operational feedback and service levels. It helps to ensure that policies and procedures are followed, that service level agreements are met and that operational lessons learned are incorporated into existing and future service refinements.

Service Operation (SO) aims to provide best practice for achieving the delivery of agreed levels of services both to end-users and the customers (where "customers" refer to those individuals who pay for the service and negotiate the SLAs). Service operation, as described in the ITIL Service Operation volume,[25] is the part of the lifecycle where the services and value is actually directly delivered. Also the monitoring of problems and balance between service reliability and cost etc. are considered. The functions include technical management, application management, operations management and service desk as well as, responsibilities for staff engaging in Service Operation.
You have to submit your application to become a Master, and if your application is accepted, you will be required to submit a proposal. If this is successful, you will be required to submit a work package. The final stage of the Master scheme consists of an interview with a panel of assessors and, if successful, you will be granted ITIL Master certification.
