Many times in your career, it can be a good thing to take a step back and re-evaluate some of your goals and current efforts to see if you need to make any moves or decisions that will affect you in the long-term. Investments like going for a Master’s degree or getting a certification can be scary, because you often just don’t know if you risk wasting time and effort on something that may not be all the beneficial to you in long-run of your professional career.
The British Educational Communications and Technology Agency (BECTA) used ITIL as the basis for their development of Framework for ICT Technical Support (FITS). Their aim was to develop a framework appropriate for British schools, which often have very small IT departments. FITS became independent from BECTA in 2009 and is now maintained and supported by The FITS Foundation. Good IT Service Management is about knowing how to integrate these factors into your development process, and this is where ITIL comes in. It covers the entire development lifecycle, from identifying requirements from a business and IT perspective, to designing and creating the solution, to delivering and maintaining the service in a state of continual review and improvement.
An event may indicate that something is not functioning correctly, leading to an incident being logged. Events may also indicate normal activity, or a need for routine intervention such as changing a tape. Event management depends on monitoring, but it is different. Event management generates and detects notifications, while monitoring checks the status of components even when no events are occurring. Events may be detected by a CI sending a message, or by a management tool polling the CI. After an event has been detected it may lead to an Incident, Problem or Change, or it may simply be logged in case the information is needed. Response to an event may be automated or may require manual intervention. If actions are needed then a trigger, such as an SMS message or an incident being automatically logged, can alert support staff.

You can schedule your exam at a Pearson VUE Prometric center that is close to you. Whether you attend training from an ATO or do a self-study, you can go for this option. Pearson VUE has stated that from 2018 onward, you cannot take ITIL Foundation exam from their center. Therefore, if you are planning to take ITIL Exam from Pearson, you may need to buck up!
Organizations need both approaches. If ITIL best practices aren’t integrated into the SDLC, and the reverse as well, then development can become siloed. Software developers are most concerned with speed and innovation and operational functions are focused on governance and stability. Without ITIL and SDLC integration, businesses are more likely to experience issues like bottlenecks, the proper resources being unavailable when development requires them, and inaccurate information being collected. Additionally, inconsistent environments, manual deployment processes, subpar quality and testing, frequent outages, poor communication between IT silos, and failing SLAs can result. Any one of those issues will need significant time and expense of an organization’s IT resources to resolve.
Be aware that ITIL uses a credit system for the Foundation through Expert levels, in which each certification earns a certain number of credits. Ultimately, a total of 22 credits is required to achieve ITIL Expert certification. (The ITIL Master has its own set of requirements, which you'll read about shortly). Think about the digital services that you use on a daily basis. These were not developed in a vacuum; rather, they were built using an ongoing project management process that took into account not only the objectives of the service, but also the potential issues in developing, delivering and maintaining it. In short, there would have been a huge number of factors to consider.
Registration fees for ITIL certification exams vary by location, ranging from around $150 to $500. While you can self-study for ITIL exams, coursework is strongly recommended, and fees for classes, whether completed online or in a classroom setting, vary by location and institute. Training can run up from $500 for an online course to well over $1,000 for classroom-based intensive instruction, and training may or may not include exam registration fees.
However, when it comes to the IT field, getting your ITIL certification is considered to be a very low-risk effort, and many will tell you that you’d be doing yourself a huge disservice to write it off. Certified ITIL professionals are a highly sought-after commodity, and the job market is stable enough where an ITIL v3 certification in any of the higher levels will be in demand for quite a long time.
ITIL Master Qualification requires the candidate to already be ITIL Expert-level qualified. To achieve the ITIL Master Qualification, candidates must "explain and justify how they selected and individually applied a range of knowledge, principles, methods and techniques from ITIL and supporting management techniques, to achieve desired business outcomes in one or more practical assignments."
During this ITIL® Foundation training course, delegates will become familiar with key ITIL® terminology, understand the link between processes and the lifecycle, and will be able to explain service management as a practice. This course will cover the phases of the Service Lifecycle, which provide a sufficient overview of the alliance between IT and business strategy.
ITIL Intermediate certifications consist of multiple modules, each with different focuses and paths that can be selected. Take as few, or as many, intermediate qualifications as required to suit needs. The ITIL Intermediate level courses are the most helpful parts of the helpful framework in helping organizations implement and see results from ITIL.
The ITIL Practitioner certification is the newest entry to the ITIL certification scheme. This exam was offered for the first time in February 2016. As the name implies, the ITIL Practitioner certification is based on practical knowledge of ITIL processes and how those principles are implemented in the real world. An ITIL Practitioner can explain how to use the ITIL framework to support business objectives and focuses on organizational change management, communications, and measurement and metrics.
The ITIL Certification Management Board (ICMB) manages ITIL certification. The Board includes representatives from interested parties within the community around the world. Members of the Board include (though are not limited to) representatives from the UK Office of Government Commerce (OGC), APM Group (APMG), The Stationery Office (TSO), ITIL Examination Panel, Examination Institutes (EIs) and the IT Service Management Forum International (itSMF) as the recognised user group.
A summary of changes has been published by the UK Government. In line with the 2007 edition, the 2011 edition consists of five core publications – Service Strategy, Service Design, Service Transition, Service Operation, and Continual Service Improvement. ITIL 2011 is an update to the ITIL framework that addresses significant additional guidance with the definition of formal processes which were previously implied but not identified, as well as correction of errors and inconsistencies.
DevOps, an emerging framework which focus on continuous integration and delivery of software. It recognizes that the relationship between developer team and operations team is broken and fills in the gap to promote trust between two teams. This solves the gap that ITIL framework creates—teams working in silo where they possess a "not my issues" attitude.
