ITIL concentrates on bridging the gap between IT services and business needs. It essentially provides methods and practices for IT Service Management, and introduces a framework for concepts, structures, and procedures that can be applied in any organization. ITIL has been proven as a highly beneficial and practical framework for achieving strategic objectives, while reducing costs and risk. Through introducing ITIL to a business, you will see a major improvement on productivity and efficiency. ITIL prevents a business and its employees from dwelling too much on technological issues, while boosting concentration towards customers and user experience. Across the globe, there is no IT Service Management framework more widely recognized and valued than ITIL.
Organizations and management systems cannot claim certification as "ITIL-compliant". An organization that has implemented ITIL guidance in IT Service Management (ITSM), may be able to achieve compliance with and seek certification under ISO/IEC 20000. However, while relatively closely aligned, ISO/IEC 20000 and ITIL Version 2 do not define identical processes. This gap has become much wider with ITIL versions 2007 and 2011. ITIL now defines twice as many ITSM processes as ISO/IEC 20000 (26 compared to 13), but there are also more subtle differences, for example:
This course covers the ITIL Foundation exam (with the most current objectives) which is the entry-level certification in the ITIL framework and offers an exceptional overview of ITIL. By obtaining your ITIL Foundation certification, you are showing employers that you understand the key elements, concepts, and terminology used in the ITIL service lifecycle, including how operations move between each stage of the lifecycle, the processes used, and their overall contribution to the service management best practices.
Starting in 2009, the APM Group, UK, established an ITIL Software Scheme (ISS) which allows IT Service Management software ITSM tool vendors to obtain endorsement through the Cabinet Office for an ITIL-based tool. This endorsement allows vendors to hold a valid ISS trademark licence and use the process compliant ITIL ‘swirl’ logo at a bronze, silver or gold level.
However, when it comes to the IT field, getting your ITIL certification is considered to be a very low-risk effort, and many will tell you that you’d be doing yourself a huge disservice to write it off. Certified ITIL professionals are a highly sought-after commodity, and the job market is stable enough where an ITIL v3 certification in any of the higher levels will be in demand for quite a long time.

Organizations are becoming increasingly dependent on corporate IT services in order to satisfy their corporate objectives and to meet their business needs. This leads to an increased requirement for high quality IT services for organizations to maintain their competitive advantage. However, ITIL certification is different. Having an ITIL certification doesn’t make us an ‘expert’ for any specific skill set. As you might already be aware, ITIL is a set of best practices and is descriptive in nature. Hence an ITIL certification isn’t about doing your job, but merely about knowing the ITIL principles. In fact, that’s precisely the reason why AXELOS have now added the ITIL Practitioner level which makes it mandatory for IT folks to apply their theoretical knowledge in practice.
